Vija Celmins turns her attention to the clouds in Untitled (Sky), created at Cirrus Editions in Los Angeles in 1975.
The artist’s images of the natural environment are primarily formal explorations of the representation of boundless space on a two-dimensional surface. In Untitled (Sky), Celmins employs a restricted tonal palette to direct the viewer’s attention to the architecture of the image. A background of light blue paper, complementing the grey hues of the clouds, preserves the focus on form.
Untitled (Sky) was produced as part of the artist’s Untitled Portfolio, a set of four lithographs featuring images of the desert, the ocean, and the galaxy. This edition is notable for its direct provenance from Jean Milant, master printer and founder of Cirrus Editions.
