The complete set of seven lithographs

More info

While Flavin had explored printmaking briefly in the early years of his career, a visit to the Gemini G.E.L. workshop in Los Angeles in 1986 inspired him to pursue a commanding chromatic project. The seven resulting prints are made with lithographic plates and printed on a lithographic press, though they are not lithographs in the conventional sense. Described as “relief prints”, the plates were inked edge-to-edge with an even application of color, often straight out of the can, that overran the handmade papers’ deckled edges on three sides.

The title of the series references Flavin’s friend and fellow artist Donald Judd. The two shared a deep interest in the relationship between color and space and collaborated consistently throughout their careers.
