The Susan Sheehan Gallery is please to be presenting our first survey of prints created exclusively by women artists. The show will feature work created throughout the last four decades, and will encompass a range of techniques, styles and media.
While it is tempting to draw conclusions about the nature of art created by women during the Post-War period, the reality is that it is almost impossible to do. There is little significant connection between Louise Bourgeois and Elizabeth Peyton for example, and neither artist has much in common with Joan Mitchell or Agnes Martin. In fact, what the exhibition demonstrates is that prints created by women are so varied as to render the category of gender itself essentially meaningless; an unexpected and interesting conclusion in and of itself.
